In 2001 Thom Brennan did the planet a huge favour and released the magnificent 'Mist' - an electronic/ambient album that should be made a compulsory purchase for anyone who has ever yearned for the kind of magic that only true innovators can summon from that space that exists between the fingertips and the keys. Quite definitely belonging to the same pioneering visionary league shared by the likes of the magnificent Steve Roach, Jeff Pearce, and a few others, Thom Brennan has a habit of conceiving things the rest of us are left to be truly moved by. All five tracks on this stunning album have a habit of providing stunning almost transcendental imagery for you but then your free to modify the moments at any time. What's particularly enticing about this album is the compositional skill and magnitude of production elements that satisfy the ear at just about any angle at any time of day. There's alot of subtle yet dynamic brush tones sweeping the canvas that Thom has created and I'm thankful that he decided to add it to this digitally distributed exhibition we all keep tapping into. I got my copy from emusic but I'd really like the physical CD.. more solid... more engaging! Inspired by the landscapes he grew up with along the Pacific coast, and with influences stemming the length and breadth of music provided by legendary electronic composers and film makers Thom Brennan's music is completely enchanting and endearing. Perhaps more importantly however, it has the kind of reach that's actually more like a personalized blessing! Colin Lynch |
