Mike Oldfield's superb orchestral album 'Music of the Spheres' gives us a magnificent collection of 14 tracks that truly captures what the artist envisioned as what an entire solar system or universe could sound like if it indeed produced its own music from simply being. Compositionally, there are reflections of, dare I mention it, Tubular Bells, but when we're talking about monoliths like Tubular Bells we're really talking about Mike Oldfield's world of feeling and his musical interpretation of that world. With Music of the Spheres we get 'worlds' and they can look anything like you want them to look. Joined by hugely appreciated composer Karl Jenkins and the Sinfonia Sfera Orchestra, the album is delivered to us with a massive degree of passion, innovation, and soul engaging thematics. Naturally, the instrumentation and overall production, as one would expect, is just too superb but that's why we like Michael and it's one reason why he's so BIG! Elley Wilson |
